Senegalese Court to Try Teenagers for Homosexuality

Two Senegalese teenagers will stand trial this coming week for allegedly committing homosexual acts. It is the latest in a string of cases targeting gay men and now young boys in Senegal.

Newspapers here in Dakar are preoccupied with the onset of the Muslim holiday Ramadan and the final matches of the season for Senegal's most popular sport, traditional wrestling. They have yet to comment on the story of two young men from the religious town of Darou Mousty in northern Senegal. The two seventeen-year-old boys will stand trial this week for "homosexual acts" in a juvenile court in the region's capital, Louga.

ELCA To Allow Partnered Gay and Lesbian Pastors

The 2009 Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted Friday to open the ministry of the church to gay and lesbian pastors and other professional workers living in committed relationships.

Iraq: Stop Killings for Homosexual Conduct

Iraqi militias are carrying out a spreading campaign of torture and murder against men suspected of homosexual conduct, or of not being "manly" enough, and Iraq authorities have done nothing to stop the killing, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Human Rights Watch called on Iraq's government to act urgently to rein in militia abuses, punish the perpetrators, and stop a new resurgence of violence that threatens all Iraqis' safety.

Obama Administration Files DOMA Brief

Today a brief was filed by the Obama Administration in a federal challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).  The brief was filed by the Justice Department in Smelt v. United States.  The Smelt case is a lawsuit brought in federal court in California by a married same-sex couple asking the federal government to give them equal treatment in federal programs.

Although in the brief the administration says DOMA should be repealed, it also says discrimination based on sexual orientation doesn't raise serious constitutional concerns.

ENDA Introduced in Senate

Today, Senators Jeff Merkley (OR), Susan Collins (ME), Edward M. Kennedy (MA) and Olympia Snowe (ME) introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to finally prohibit job discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.  They were joined in this effort by 34 other members of the Senate.
